Tai Chi
Pronounced ‘tie chee’, full name ‘tai chi chuan’, this graceful flowing exercise is popular in both China and the West. Originally developed in the 13th century as a martial art, it is usually taught simply as a method of achieving balance, concentration and relaxation.

The exercise sequences (called ‘forms’), consist of different postures and movements that flow into each other. These work on every part of the body and ensure that chi, or life energy, is circulating freely and that our negative and positive, or yin and yang, elements are balanced. The movements have imaginative names like ‘Bring tiger to the mountain’ or ‘Snake creeps down’ and are quite difficult to remember to start with. However, tai chi is suitable for anyone of whatever age or level of fitness.
