Reiki
Reiki (pronounced 'ray-key') is a form of hands-on healing developed in the 19th century from ancient Buddhist texts by Mikao Usui, a Japanese teacher of theology. The name is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, ‘ki’ being the equivalent of the Chinese chi.

Reiki skills are passed on through a structured - and sometimes expensive - programme of training, in three stages. The first takes two to four days and involves being ‘attuned’ to Reiki energy by a Reiki master and learning how to work on yourself, other people, animals and plants.

You are also taught the five Reiki principles which are:

Just for today, do not worry.

Just for today, do not anger.

Honour your parents, teachers and elders.

Earn your living honestly.

Show gratitude to every living thing.

The second stage must be at least three months later to give you a chance to get used to the new energy. Also two to four days long, it involves more energy activation and learning how to give distant healing and work with symbols.

Becoming a master, the third stage, enables you to teach reiki. Starting at least three years after the first stage, this takes about a year of one-to-one work with a Reiki grand master.
