Homoeopathy
Homoeopathy was developed about 200 years ago by Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor, who was concerned about the side-effects of conventional medicines. Homoeopathic remedies are prepared by diluting ingredients many times and shaking or ‘succussing’ them. No biological trace of the original substance is left, which makes the remedies very safe, but it is thought that the succussing leaves an energy imprint in the liquid and this is what affects us.

Unlike conventional drugs, all the remedies are tested on humans not animals. The constituents are mostly plants, but also include minerals and some animal substances (eg: insects, snake venom, cuttlefish bone).

The remedies work on the principle of ‘like cures like’. So, for example, if you couldn’t sleep you might be given a homoeopathic remedy of something like caffeine that normally causes sleeplessness. This stimulates the body’s own powers of healing (and may mean that your symptoms get worse before they get better).

Like other complementary therapies, homoeopathy can treat the mind and the body, and it is effective for acute as well as chronic illness. In fact, its first major successes came during a cholera epidemic in the 1830s. Britain today has five homoeopathic hospitals and increasing numbers of doctors are qualified in homoeopathy. Homoeopathy is also a popular treatment for animals.
