Crystals & Crystal Therapy
Crystals are precious and semi-precious stones of all shapes, sizes and colours. They store, transmit and amplify subtle energy or life force and have been used by shamans and in Eastern healing systems, like ayurveda, for thousands of years. Although these subtle powers cannot yet be demonstrated scientifically, crystals do have many intriguing scientific properties. When compressed they give off electric signals and light, and they vibrate when an electric current is passed through them (clear quartz is used in electronics because of this.)
Like living systems, they grow by reproducing themselves and, when subjected to some outside force, such as heat, light, pressure or electricity, they are able to restore their internal stability. Some crystals (eg: lodestone) are magnetic.
According to the clairvoyant Edgar Cayce, the Atlanteans harnessed the sun's energy with crystals and it was misuse of crystal power that caused the cataclysms that eventually sank their continent - and the reason we are rediscovering crystals now is because many people from Atlantis are being reincarnated.
Although several different sorts of therapists may work with crystals (eg: colour therapists, healers, kinesiologists), they are ideal for home use. Holding crystals in your hand can help you when you meditate - you may find they become very hot or start emitting a pulse like a weak electric fence. You can also place them on or around you in what are sometimes known as 'nets'. On the body, crystals can sometimes feel unnaturally heavy. You can, of course, wear crystals as jewellery, keep them in your pocket or hang them in a pouch round your neck, and you can place them around the house and garden.
Choose crystals that appeal to you or go by the colours of the chakras. If you want to know more about the properties of individual types, consult the crystal bible, Love is in the Earth by Melody.
The shape and size of crystals affects how they work but does not make them any less effective. They can be tumbled (polished), shaped, rough cut (natural), or in clusters. Crystals that taper towards a faceted point are known as 'wands'. Point them where you want the energy to go. For instance, point them away from you if you want to calm down or clear out stale energy, or towards you if you need revitalising or healing. Clusters work well around a room, and small polished and shaped stones are nice to hold.
Clear quartz is a universal cure-all and enhances the effects of all the others. It is traditional to use it for 'scrying', or divination from a reflective surface, and it is the ingredient of true 'crystal balls'. However, because of the expense, glass is more often used now.
You will need to 'cleanse'crystals when you first acquire them and then at regular intervals after that - as a rough guide, crystals around a room should be cleansed every week and those you wear or use for meditation and healing every few days. If using them on different people cleanse after each person.
Here are some methods:
• Hold under running water and then dry in the sun.
• Bury in sea salt for 24 hours (don©ˆt use salt water because this can dissolve some crystals.)
• Smudge them - waft fragrant smoke towards them (this is a good way of cleansing very heavy crystals) or pass them through the smoke.
• Use pure sound such as that made by a tuning fork, bell, gong or 'singing bowl'.
