Colour & Light Therapy
Like plants we are sensitive to light. For example, natural light causes the level of cholesterol in our blood to drop, and not enough can lead to depression. The hormone melatonin, which makes us sleepy, is secreted by our bodies in the absence of light.
And we are also sensitive to colour, whether or not we can actually see it. Most of us can be trained to distinguish colours through touch alone. Ultraviolet rays enable the body to manufacture vitamin D, and red light has been found to speed up the circulation and raise blood pressure.
Colour and light therapy are used within both conventional and complementary medicine for both physical and mental problems. It is a vast subject which has only ever been researched piecemeal. In Indian ayurvedic medicine colour and light have been used for millennia and are related to the chakras (the body’s energy centres), each of which responds to a different colour and is connected to different organs of the body and different types of mental and emotional activity.
Complementary therapists shine beams of coloured light on to part or all of the body, and advise on the colours of clothes, furnishings and food. In Aura soma therapy you choose from an array of coloured oils. Your choice is then used by the therapist to advise you on your physical and emotional health, and you take the oil away to use on your body.
Colourpuncture directs beams of light on to acupuncture points. A Monochrome Dome developed in Sweden bathes you in the entire spectrum of colours and is used to treat depression, phobias, stress and anxiety.
Light therapy is sometimes used by doctors for skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne and skin cancer. In the 1920s a variety of ailments, including wounds and scars, asthma, hay fever, pneumonia and cataracts, were treated with light therapy and its wider use is coming back into favour. Sufferers of the winter depression known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) are treated with bright light therapy and equipment for home use is available. This can also help eating disorders, addictions and infertility.
