Aromatherapy
AROMATHERAPY uses the ‘essential oils’ of plants, most commonly in massage. Essential oils are what gives plants their scent, so called because they are concentrated essences extracted by distillation.

The oils have both physical and emotional effects, our sense of smell being directly connected to the emotional centres of our brain. As well as in massage, the oils can be used in compresses and the bath, vaporized or inhaled, or (under trained guidance only) taken internally.

Fragrant plant oils have been used for thousands of years, but their medicinal use fell out of favour in Europe in the middle ages, restricting them to the perfume industry. In the 19th century, they began to be replaced by synthetic scents, and it wasn’t until the early 20th century, when a French chemist burnt his hand and accidentally discovered the healing power of lavender, that the use of essential oils revived.

Aromatherapy can treat a range of health problems. Hormonal disorders respond particularly well. Aromatherapy massage is enjoyable in itself and is useful for stress-related conditions, back and neck pain, high blood pressure, headaches and insomnia. It can also help skin problems like acne, eczema, psoriasis, stretch marks, scars and sunburn.
