Acupuncture
Part of traditional Chinese medicine, ACUPUNCTURE works on the body's energy or chi. Chi flows around the body along 14 main channels called 'meridians' and a network of smaller channels. These channels are connected not just to different organs and parts of the body, but also to different emotions or states of mind. At certain points called 'acupoints', along the meridians, the chi can be manipulated so as to remove blockages or balance the flow. This manipulation is done with extremely fine needles which are inserted anything from a quarter of an inch to four inches. These may then be gently rotated and either removed immediately or left in for up to half an hour. As many as 15 needles may be used at one time, but four to six is more normal.
The insertion of the needles hurts no more than a pinprick, but you may feel an ache at the site or along the meridian, and you can feel quite disorientated as the chi rearranges itself although many people feel pleasantly sleepy. After treatment you can feel quite tired.
'Moxibustion' is a process where heat is applied to acupoints by burning a small bundle of a herb called moxa (Chinese mugwort).
Acupuncture can be used to treat both acute and chronic conditions, and mental/emotional troubles as well as physical ones. It can also be used preventatively. Although full training takes several years, some Western doctors undergo short courses and use acupuncture simply for pain relief.
Acumassage
Massage of acupoints.
Acupressure
Like acupuncture, this works on the body's energy system. It uses light pressure or stroking on the acupoints and gentle manipulation of the limbs. It is less effective than acupuncture but useful for people with a fear of needles. With care, it can also be used at home.
