Protest Takes Flight
Exeter Airport’s planned expansion has met with further protest from Friends of the Earth.
Gathering signatures in the city centre recently, the environmental pressure group are keen to stress the importance of curbing any future development of Devon’s airport due to countrywide carbon emission targets. The airport seeks to increase its annual passenger intake from 1m to 3.5m, a move that the FoE say would dramatically damage the environment during a period when consumers should be seeking to reduce their air flights to cut emissions.
Newquay and Plymouth are also set to increase the number of runways over the next few years, much to the consternation of pressure group South West Air Action. Dismissing claims of improved economical growth due to airport expansion, the group has queried the validity of extra short haul flights and their priority to passengers in light of the long-lasting climate damage this will cause.
