Introduction to Alexander Technique

THE Society of Teachers of Alexander Technique (STAT) have put together this introduction to the therapy for Connect readers.

THE Alexander Technique is used worldwide by performing artists and athletes of all standards and is increasingly relevant to the needs of people’s everyday lives. The technique is helpful both to those striving for excellence and to those suffering from common conditions such as repetitive strain injury and back pain
Learning the Alexander Technique can positively help to prevent or alleviate conditions associated with undue tension or poor posture. These include many difficulties with coordination and movement, joint and muscle problems, breathing disorders, and stress-related conditions.

A technique for everyone

The Alexander Technique can also enhance rehabilitation after surgery, injury, or illness and provide support during pregnancy and preparation for childbirth.

Medical practitioners now acknowledge the many benefits of the Alexander Technique and pupils are increasingly referred to STAT recognised teachers by their General Practitioners. There is currently a £1 million government study being undertaken by Southampton University and the NHS into the Alexander Technique’s application to back pain.

The Alexander Technique is practiced and enjoyed by an increasing number of famous names, including John Cleese, Dame Judi Dench, Michael Palin, Seb Coe, Linford Christie, Barry Humphries, Prunella Scales, Jennifer Saunders, Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley, Penelope Keith and Julia Sawalha.

Sue Holladay, chair of STAT, says: "STAT are delighted with this opportunity to increase awareness of the Alexander Technique and to make it more accessible to all.

"The technique has been perceived in the past as being slightly elitist and STAT aims to show that the Alexander Technique can be of great benefit to everybody. We will be running Centenary Year events, educational initiatives and offering introductory lessons at an affordable price.

"The objective is to inform and broaden the general awareness of the exceptional benefits that the Alexander Technique can provide to all of us in our daily lives."
