Food intolerances and allergies are very common. Allergy UK (a medical charity founded in 1991) estimates that 15 million people in the UK suffer from allergies, with an increased number of children suffering and as many as four in ten school children having at least one allergic condition.
With the increases in processed foods, preservatives, additives and sweeteners our foods are becoming less natural and harder for our bodies to process. Too much of the wrong type of foods or an unbalanced diet can lead to food intolerances and a disturbed digestive system. Quite simply our bodies cannot break down or process certain foods.
Food intolerances build up and can lead to the symptoms mentioned above as well as conditions such as psoriasis, depression, fungal infections and asthma, just to mention a few. Symptoms are not immediately life threatening but affect many systems within the body and can make a person feel very unwell, they may be present at all times or fluctuate dependant on what foods have been eaten and the body’s ability to digest at the time. Many people suffer for years without being able to identify the food or even realise that the foods they are eating are leading to their symptoms and making them feel unwell. It is very hard to identify the single foods that may be leading to the symptoms and often there is more than one food, which is why professional help should always be used.
When food intolerance builds up it leads to a dysfunctional digestive system, in turn leading to a reduction in the absorption of vitamins and minerals which are required for all body functions. Symptoms will develop and a long term upset of this cause can lead to more serious conditions.
For example, a person suffering from wheat intolerance without knowing may at first just feel a little uncomfortable and bloated in the stomach after they have eaten. Over time when the intolerance builds up, digestion will become impaired; vitamin and mineral absorption will decrease. Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Constipation may develop and bowel motions may become irregular. In the case of constipation the toxins which should be expelled from the body may be reabsorbed and lead to headaches and migraines. Energy levels will drop, and the body’s systems will be under-functioning due to the lack of available vitamins and minerals. A vicious circle begins with the body trying to function whilst wheat is still being consumed. More symptoms may present themselves including skin conditions, aches and pains in the joints, re-occurring infections and many more.
A simple food intolerance test can identify the foods which are leading to symptoms and an elimination diet for a period of time can alleviate symptoms and rebalance the body. Once the”rogue” food has been identified and the diet followed symptoms usually start to improve within 3-4 weeks dependant on the individual, energy levels will increase, the complexion becomes clearer and the body begins to function altogether better. Food intolerance testing and nutritional therapy is about long term health not ‘quick fixes’. It treats the cause and the person as a whole rather than just the symptom.
Whilst diagnosis is possible it is best to seek professional advice. Food intolerances are individual and are better diagnosed by a professional and with the correct dietary information results can be attained effectively and safely.
Typically initial appointments with a specialist will last one and a half hours, during which a full consultation will take place, covering client history, testing for 100 foods, vitamin and mineral deficiency, and candida.
