Local Organic Vegetables Free to Low Income Families

South East Cornwall organic vegetable grower “Trevalon Organic Vegetables” has joined the Healthy Start scheme which means that families on low income can now exchange Healthy Start Vouchers for a weekly delivery of fresh organic vegetables.
Trevalon which grows vegetables at Herodsfoot, near Liskeard, delivers its boxes of fresh organic vegetables every week direct to its customers. Mark Simon, organic grower says “Some people think organic means expensive, but we sell direct to customers which means that our vegetables are extremely good value, and now by joining the Healthy Start scheme it means that families on low incomes can enjoy the benefits of local fresh organic vegetables”.
Trevalon is an 18-acre organic smallholding on a south facing tributary valley of the West Looe River. It comprises four small fields bounded by traditional hedge topped stone-faced banks where organic vegetables, top and soft-fruits and areas of pasture are grown, the latter forgrazing bt Trevallon’s two working horses. The horses, Bill and Ben, help with the ploughing, vegetable bed preparation and weeding. The horses graze the steeper areas of land while the more gently sloping areas are used for vegetable production. Trevalon is owned by a community land trust and management decisions are made collectively by members. The public is invited to help produce the food they eat, attend events, open days, take part in workdays and learn new skills. An area of land has also been set aside for use as a community garden. www.trevalon.blogspot.com
