Human Guinea Pigs
It was shocking to find that modified potatoes are also fed to sick patients. This study came out after a long court case brought forward by Greenpeace Russia against Monsanto and Institute of nutrition of the Russian Academy of Science who had previously refused to release it.
The report said that; “10 patients suffering from hypertensive disease and ischemic heart disease were fed a pound of the Russet Burbank potatoes - modified to resist Colorado beetles - every day for three weeks, and monitored.” Dr. Michael Antoniou, reader in molecular genetics at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine, said use of humans was “irresponsible and totally unethical, especially when already ill subjects were enrolled. These people truly were guinea pigs”. In response to this, the report also said that the volunteers liked the potatoes and even thought of taking them home to their families.
When presented with this new evidence of the rats reactions to the potatoes, DEFRA’s spokesman response was; “Nothing from these trials will be eaten. They are purely for testing purposes in hope to develop more resistant potatoes.
Mike Green, Policy Officer from the Soil Association is; “Shocked at the government for allowing these trials. The public is against them, and the British Potato Council has denied them.”
The Government is simply determined to carry out GM trials in the UK even though there still hasn’t been any positive feed back from past trials and even after there has been a massive concern from the public.
Farmers have every right to oppose to the new GM labelling laws that the Government want to introduce. Why mislead the public? Even if it is a small percentage of GM that will be allowed in products, the consumers should defiantly be told about it. It is up the consumer to decide what to buy and what to avoid.
