Do You Know Where Your Food Has Come From?

South Devon based, award winning online Organic Meat business has developed a new web-based system which allows its customers to fi nd out about the exact farm that every cut of meat has come from.
Easily accessed via the wellhungmeat.com website, customers can visit the traceability area and use the new tool to read about the farms and farmers that have produced the meat that they are eating. The system allows users to trace each individual pack of mince or shoulder of pork back to the farm of provenance.
Graeme Roy, Managing Director of Well Hung Meat, explains the thinking behind the new traceability feature, “Organic certification requires that every single cut of meat or organic carrot is traceable back to the farm on which it was grown. There is a trail of paperwork and the regulations are very strict. We feel it is very important that we tell our customers the whole story behind the meat that they are eating, all the way from the farm to the plate (or the soil to the sirloin as we like to say). The new feature on our website allows us to do this in a way that is both user-friendly and interactive.”
The system uses the carcass number of the animal. This number is unique to the animal or, in the case of lambs and chickens, unique to a small batch of animals. Using this unique number, which is printed on every pack of meat, users click on the corresponding carcass number on the website and a window opens with information about the farm including the location, name of the farmer, breeds used, photos and any other interesting insights.
