Feldenkrais Method
Picture Yourself Experiencing Your Personal Best.....
Nikhila Ludlow
When you think about ‘Life Improvement’ do you think about being stress-free, no aches and pains, doing the things you enjoy doing?
An increasing number of people every year are turning to the many types of alternative medicine and exercise systems available today. A great number of people then experience strain or injury as a result of whatever it is they have taken up doing in order to improve their lives by keeping fit. Why?
Most of our actions are learned behaviours, which then become largely ‘automatic’ or habitual. This in essence, is a good thing if we had to remember all we did we would likely go mad, but some of our ‘habits’ are efficient, producing graceful, co-ordinated action or movement, and some are not.
If you can move gracefully, easily, comfortably, things just go so much more smoothly, don’t they? And when things go smoothly where’s the stress?
Where your action is restricted or difficult, there is weakness, and often - pain.
“If you know what you do, then you can do what you want” is a statement made by Moshe Feldenkrais. By knowing how you act or move, you can learn how to improve yourself. If you improve, the quality of your life will improve.
The Feldenkrais Method is well-known for it’s capacity to restore mobility after accident or injury; to remove chronic pain, to slow the process of degenerative disease. Many people also use it to enhance their existing movement skills eg. dancers, musicians, athletes.
Experiencing simple, gentle, relaxing individual sessions or movement lessons, usually carried out laying down, your bones, muscles and nervous system will be reminded how they can work together to let you move as you naturally should.
Look in the ‘Connections’ section for details of your local Feldenkrais Practitioner.
