Addiction Counselling and Support
Addictions fall into four main categories alcohol, drug and other substance abuse and gambling addictions. The one thing they all have in common is that they can all be progressive diseases with similar phases.
These include chasing the first “high/win” and using the object of addiction to escape pain or in the case of gambling to try and recover funds to replace unsuccessful betting outlay. Persons pre occupied with their addictions may experience low self- esteem, mood swings and severe depression.
Drug, alcohol, smoking and other substance addictions all have direct health implications which in extreme circumstances can lead to fatality if left uncontrolled. Whereas with gambling these are more indirect increasing the perception that it is less potentially addicting, unfortunately this is not the case.
Addictions are of real concern to those who suffer as a result of the addictive quality of drugs, alcohol, smoking, gambling and porn. Those who suffer include individuals caught up in a vicious circle of wanting more, as well as families, friends, and the workplace.
One similarity between all addictions is the inability to stop or control it, without support. Talking to someone who is non-judgmental and totally impartial early on when it is clear that there may be a difficulty, or when stresses are first experienced, is a good way to get hold of the issues, and think about doing something about them. The advantage of phone counselling is that it can be accessed more readily and more quickly than most other forms of face to face therapy.
Counselling helps you to explore the thought patterns and behaviors that characterise any disturbing issues, and sometimes the past experiences that continue to influence them. It encourages you to challenge your beliefs about yourself and abilities in order to achieve a more realistic view of the situation.
It’s an opportunity to explore your problems and emotions with someone who will respect and encourage your opinions and decisions, confidentially and without passing judgment. More people nowadays are using counselling and discovering the benefits for themselves, their partners and outside the home.
We understand that trying to get counselling can be a challenge in itself. Arranging everything through a GP can take months and during stressful times it is important to speak to someone who can listen and provide counselling upon demand.
