A More Sustainable Lifestyle...

1. Ensure your home is energy efficient - basic improvements include insulation, switching to low-energy lights and draught proofing (see main article).

2. Sign up for green electricity and get your power from the sun, wind and water.

3. Composting organic waste to reduce the creation of methane (21% more harmful that carbon dioxide), reduce transportation and provide your garden with nutrients.

4. Conserve water to save you money and help limit your impact on the environment by reducing water treatment. Take showers not baths and store rainwater in a water butt for use in the garden.

5. Use a bicycle and find out about converting your car to natural gas - 70% grants are available and gas is half the price of petrol.

6. Support low-cost renewable energy products, such as solar- powered calculators, torches and outside lights and wind-up radios.

7. Buy locally grown organic food that is in season - 40% of UK freight is food transportation.

8. Support products such as 'fair trade' chocolate, 'green' paints and 'eco' cleaning products. Avoid intensively farmed GM crops - we still don't know how they affect the environment.

9. Avoid companies with poor environmental and ethical records.
